SPRING GARDEN BANDSpecial Spring Garden Band Concert |
"Chuck Long featured with the Spring Garden Band" (this may be worthy of a feature article since the band is a York 'institution' and Chuck Long Is a prominent York citizen)" The Spring Garden Band will present a free public concert on Sunday, September 7th at 2:00 PM in Farquhar Park in York. Bring Lawn Chairs and join the band in the area adjacent to the Kaltreider-Benfer Library. In case of inclement weather the concert will be held in the near-by Red Lion Area Senior High School Auditorium. The program will include numerous marches, show tunes, a popular overture and other fan favorites. Of special interest and importance is the premier of an original composition of music commissioned for trumpeter Charles "Chuck" Long. AUGUST IN YORK is a piece for band and solo trumpet. It was commissioned in honor of Chuck's 70th birthday by his family, wife Evelyn, children Jennifer, Joseph and Daniel and their spouses, siblings Russell and Catherine and spouses and cousin Eleanor and husband. The composer, James M. Stephenson of Chicago was a professional trumpet player who now composes on a full-time basis. His web site www.stephensonmusic.com lists his background, accomplishments and his clientel which is as diverse as Branford Marsalis and the Pointer Sisters to Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore and Oregon Symphonies. Charles Long, a York native, has played trumpet with the Spring Garden Band and York Symphony since 1960. He also plays with area "big bands" and jazz groups. His music education began with piano lessons at age 5 and trumpet instruction starting about age 11. He has an engineering degree from Lehigh University and a J.D. degree from the University of Maryland Law School. He is a partner in the York law firm of Smith, Anderson, Baker and Long. Please join us for an exciting evening of great music as the Spring Garden Band plays the old favorites and introduces the brand new AUGUST IN YORK.
